The Office of the Dean of Students and Student ConductÌýat Å·ÃÀ¸ßÇå directs its efforts toward promoting student academic success, student personal and professional development, and enhancing the quality of campus life. The Division develops, implements and manages programs, services and activities that ensure the development of competencies that complement the academic mission of the University.Ìý

    Operating within the context of the University’s mission, the Office of the Dean of Students and Student Conduct seeks to maintain the University’s academic environment by educating and upholding community standards. The Office of the Dean of Students and Student Conduct supports the educational mission of the University by administering the Student Conduct Code in a manner that educates and holds Students accountable for Student Conduct Code violations and helps Students grow into more responsible and community-minded persons.

  • Tiger's Den Food Pantry

    Food insecurity is when a person lacks access to nutritious, affordable food. As report by researchers in higher education about one-third of college students experience food insecurity.

    In response to those findings university officials, including Ms. Tameka Harper, MPA, Dean of Students, Department of Social Work and Ms. Kiyana Porter, Junior Political Science student began the establishment of the Tiger’s DenÌýthe food pantry. Ms. Porter was one of the main students advocating for the food pantry’s creation. After advocating for the pantry for more than a year and a half, Porter is now the student manager of the pantry, who is responsible for training volunteers and assisting with the daily operations. She will remain on a subcommittee, along with three university faculty members and administrators to maintain the pantry.

    Students can visit the pantry once per week by showing their Å·ÃÀ¸ßÇå student ID cards.Ìý

    Students will not be questioned about their food security when they enter the food pantry.

    The pantry will start by giving out canned and non-perishable food items like cereal, juice, pasta and canned fruits and vegetables. The pantry will also provide allergen-friendly items, like dried fruit and gluten-free pasta.

    You can help support the Å·ÃÀ¸ßÇå Tiger’s Den Food Pantry by donating nonperishable food items, toiletries and feminine products directly to the Pantry! All donations will be used to stock the Food Pantry and support members of the Å·ÃÀ¸ßÇå student campus community. CLASSES MISSEDÌýNOTIFICATIONS

At the Office of the Dean of Students and Student Conduct, our commitment lies in serving students with utmost dedication. We take pride in offering assistance and exercising professional judgment during times when students encounter unforeseen and difficult circumstances. As part of our commitment, we may provide a classes missed memo as a considerate gesture to inform instructors about a student's absence.

Our primary goal is to support students through challenging situations by maintaining open lines of communication between the Office of the Dean of Students and Student Conduct, instructors, and students themselves. By preparing classes missed memos, we strive to ensure that instructors are aware of any absences and can work collaboratively with students to address missed coursework or assignments.

We understand that unexpected circumstances can arise, and our aim is to assist students in navigating these situations while fostering an environment of understanding and support.


WHAT IS A CLASSES MISSED MEMO?
Classes missed memos are provided to students under limited circumstances supported by appropriate documentation. These extenuating situations may include:

  • Absences for illness or medical appointments- For injury or illness that Ìýrequires a student to be absent from classes for three or more university Ìýbusiness days (to include classes on Saturday), the student should obtain a Ìýmedical confirmation note from his or her medical provider. ÌýThe Student Health Center or an off-campus medical professional can provide a medical confirmation note only if medical professionals are involved in the medical care of the student. The medical confirmation note must contain the date and time of the illness and medical professional's confirmation of needed absence.
  • Prolonged hospitalization
  • Serious illness, accident or injury ( inclusive of Injury or illness that is too severe or contagious for the student to
  • attend class
  • Victim of or witness to a crime
  • Death or serious illness of a family member
WHAT IS A CLASSES MISSED MEMO NOT?

Please note that a classes missed memo does not serve as an institutional excuse. An institutional excuse is specifically reserved for situations where a student represents the university in academic, extracurricular, or athletic events or is engaged in military service.

Regarding absences that do not fall under institutional excuses, it is at the discretion of each instructor to address them. Various factors may be taken into consideration, including the attendance policy outlined in the course syllabus, the course structure, as well as the student's prior attendance and performance. Only an instructor has the authority to "excuse" an absence. We strongly advise students to maintain open communication with their instructors and collaborate on making arrangements to compensate for any missed work.

It is important for students to recognize that the resolution of missed classwork ultimately lies in coordination with their instructors. By actively engaging with their instructors, students can effectively navigate the process of making up for any missed coursework or assignments.


CLASSES MISSED MEMOS WILL NOT BE ISSUED IN THE FOLLOWING CIRCUMSTANCES:
  • Absences where students are away for less than three (3) consecutive instructional days, including for illness or medical appointments.
  • An absence longer than two weeks without extraordinary circumstances
  • Personal travel such as holiday travel, weddings, family reunions or job interviews
  • Religious Holidays (see Academic Calendar)
  • A late request: The classes missed memo request is made more than two weeks after the last day of the absence
  • Jury duty
  • Interim Suspension/ Student Conduct Sanction
  • Legal Issues
  • Weather related absences or travel delays

To request a memo for missed classes, students are required to complete an online form (). Please ensure that the form includes the following details: the reason for your absence, the specific dates of your absence, and the anticipated date of your return to class. It is important to note that students must be ready to upload appropriate documentation supporting the reason for their absence. Examples of acceptable documentation include a note from a healthcare provider (Return to School Certificate), hospital discharge paperwork, an obituary or funeral program, or any other relevant documentation that clearly indicates the nature and duration of the absence. It is crucial that all documentation is submitted before the notifications to professors are finalized and distributed.

STUDENT CONDUCT REFERRAL AND PROCESS

Emails & Texts from MaxientÌýÌýmaxient logo

The Office of the Dean of Students and Student ConductÌýat Å·ÃÀ¸ßÇå utilizes a third-party email software called Maxient. It is a secure, web-based application that manages communication from our office, including meeting requests and follow-ups involving conduct and non-conduct issues.Ìý

Students receiving an email from Maxient will see a link to the correspondence sent from Å·ÃÀ¸ßÇå.Ìý

Within the email’s text, students will be given a link to a log-in screen, by which they can access the correspondence letter or notice our office has sent.Ìý

Maxient also allows Å·ÃÀ¸ßÇå to send text messages to students if their cell phone number is on file. This means that our office can send individual texts to students with a link to the communication sent via Maxient.Ìý

TIGER'S DEN FOOD PANTRY

  • Mission andÌýPhilosophy

    Food insecurity refers to the lack of access to nutritious and affordable food, and it is a significant issue affecting a substantial portion of college students. Research conducted in higher education indicates that approximately one-third of college students experience food insecurity.

    In response to these distressing findings, university officials, student organizations,Ìýalumni, community partners and more have taken action to help relieve that circumstance at Å·ÃÀ¸ßÇå. With the strong vision and appeal of then Ms. Kiyana Porter, a dedicated Junior Political Science student,Ìý the Dvision of Student Affairs spearheaded the creation of a food pantry on our campus in 2019 under the leadership and supervisionÌýof the Office of the Dean of Students.Ìý

    To access the food pantry, students can visit once per week and are required to present their Å·ÃÀ¸ßÇå student ID cards. The food provided will be conveniently prepackaged for efficient distribution.

    We are grateful for the commitment and efforts of everyone involved in bringing this valuable resource to our campus. The food pantry stands as a testament to our dedication to supporting our students in times of need.
